An award winning, Grade 1 Training Academy and elite training facility for Manchester City F.C

The City Football Academy is a blueprint for a world beating youth and elite player training centre, based on research into 30 sports development facilities across five continents. Built on what was originally an overlooked, polluted,80-acre site, the £87.9m Academy has helped regenerate the east of Manchester and brought long-term sustainability to the area through the elite training facilities.

With several awards to its name, the new Grade 1 Academy and elite training facility comprises 12 youth development football pitches & 4 first team football pitches. This first-class facility is purpose built for senior and junior, men’s and women’s teams and to allow more time to be spent on developing young players. The centre also includes state of the art classrooms, accommodation for junior and senior players, changing rooms, gym, refectory, and injury centre. Not to mention Northwest of the Central Training Facility is a 7,000-seat arena with the football club’s Global Headquarters and Media Centre—a transparent design that echoes the open nature of the Club to the community.

Architect: Rafael Vinoly

Rafael Vinoly Architects are an internationally renowned New York based firm with offices located in Manchester. Over the past thirty-three years, the practice’s key trademark is its ability to reinvent institutional typologies and integrate the public realm into civic buildings. The underlying aim of the City Football Academy was to create a “world-leading” training facility to raise athlete performance and standards through enhanced training, injury management, sports science, and research facilities. The scheme remediates and transforms a brownfield site adjacent to MCFC’s Etihad Stadium into Manchester City FC’s flagship headquarters and training facility.

Client: Manchester City Football Club

City Football Academy emerged from the Manchester City Football Club’s desire to develop a world-leading campus to recruit and train young athletic talent, raise athlete performance, and consolidate its operations and global headquarters in a single flagship facility located across from its home stadium in East Manchester. Their desire to help young players achieve their full potential both on and off the field has resulted in this groundbreaking development, which in turn, will help Manchester City Football Club attract the best players in the world in their ambition to retain the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup titles.
